It is very common for your furry friends to be exposed or even infected with parasites. Exposure comes from their surrounding areas and other animals they come in contact with. Parasites cause great discomfort and can create even more serious conditions in your pets. What parasites might affect my pet?

Parasites can be internal and external. Internal parasites usually live within the digestive system and are detected through examination of the stool. Internal parasites include: heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and coccidia. External parasites live on your pet’s body and physical examinations and tests are used to diagnose these parasites. Fleas, ticks, mange mites, ear mites and ringworm are external parasites that can infect your pet.

What are signs of parasites in my pet?

In some cases, the signs may not be so evident and that is why your pet needs regular checkups. As a pet parent, you will want to pay close attention to the behaviours of your pet as they might show signs of an infestation. Here are some signs you should look out for:

• Swollen belly
• Lethargy
• Brown or black discharge in ears
• Itching
• Redness of the skin

What parasites on my pet can affect my family?

As previously mentioned, some parasites can be transferred to humans. Fleas and ticks can present a risk to your family’s health. Illnesses such as rickettsiosis and bartonellosis can be transmitted to humans. Humans can also be infected with tapeworms. To reduce the risk of infection in your family it is best to eliminate parasites in your pets, take extra precautions when handling pet waste and practice good personal hygiene.

How can I protect my pet from a parasitic infection?

Our veterinarians recommend a year-round prevention program. Parasites can infect your pets at any time and, even though the weather outside may not be conducive, external parasites can live inside the house.
